Pasadena Unified’s Dr. Kathy Onoye Honored by El Centro De Accion Social

Dr. Onoye was honored for spearheading educational programs that have helped every child — regardless of their socio-economic status — learn and achieve at high levels.“I am honored to be recognized by El Centro and I share this recognition with the educators, children and families of PUSD who have put into practice their belief that a quality public education can and does improve the future for the entire community,” said Onoye.As PUSD’s Executive Director of Elementary Education since 2008, Dr. Onoye was responsible for initiating some of PUSD’s signature programs: Dual Language Immersion programs in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, transitional kindergarten and early childhood education programs.Dr. Onoye previously served as principal of Willard Elementary School where she led the school to close the achievement gap by combining inquiry-based learning practices with a standards-based curriculum. In 2004, Willard became the first school in PUSD and one of the first five urban public schools in the country to earn authorization as an International Baccalaureate school. The prestigious program develops the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. The development of communication, collaboration, critical-thinking skills prepare students to thrive in the 21st century.“I am pleased to join El Centro de Acción Social in honoring Dr. Onoye and her work focused on providing rigorous and relevant instruction to countless children in PUSD,” said PUSD Superintendent Jon R. Gundry. “In her quiet and determined way, she has proven that the achievement gap between groups of children can be closed when teachers, families and staff work in concert toward a single goal.”Dr. Onoye, a long-time resident of Pasadena, is a member of the Board of Directors of the Pasadena Educational Foundation, Clerk of the Board of Directors of All-Saints Church in Pasadena and serves on the advisory board of Young & Healthy. She also volunteers at Huntington Memorial Hospital. Dr. Onoye began her career as a classroom teacher at PUSD’s Audubon Elementary School in 1971.
