Heisler: Eastern Conference could be waking from its coma … and other NBA surprises

first_img Clippers’ rhythm is missing but their spirits strong before playoff opener Not to give away our secrets but the way it works, pundits spend half the time telling you what’s going to happen. The other half, we spend telling you if we got anything right.Actually, I rate people in the biz according to their willingness to acknowledge mistakes and bad calls … like last spring when I said Doc Rivers would be gone.Sorry, Doc. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with PackersIn that spirit, here are some surprises, early as it is to make judgments, or as it would be if I didn’t have a column due.• The Eastern Conference might not be dead, after all.It could be waking from a 20-year coma since Michael Jordan’s 1998 farewell in Chicago, with the West winning 14 Finals since then. The Celtics, bursting with talent and high picks, were supposed to rule this season after reaching last spring’s conference finals with their junior varsity without Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward. They’re taking their time about it, but it’s early. Trail Blazers beat Grizzlies in play-in, earn first-round series with the Lakers Enjoy the rest of your 67-game commitment, Luke!• The Clippers haven’t gone away. They were supposed to field a bunch of scrappy veterans and not win too often with their Las Vegas over/under at 35.5.Insiders last spring expected Rivers to be scapegoated for all that had gone wrong, leading to the departures of the CP3-Blake Griffin-DeAndre Jordan nucleus, not to mention Doc’s $11 million salary. In a stunner, Steve Ballmer and Co. didn’t just bring Rivers back but extended his contract.Their scrappy veterans might not be overmatched, after all, with a coach good enough to do something with them.•The JaVale McGee, Totally Undreamed-Of Comeback of the Year Award goes to … Javale McGee.I just invented it. He’s such a surprise after disappointing seven previous teams with a vacuous approach that belied his size, length and athleticism, that I named it after him. Clippers rookies key overtime victory over Oklahoma City center_img Now, they have a rival with the 76ers getting a real Big Three to replace their young, fanciful one with Jimmy Butler forcing his way out of Minnesota and replacing Markelle Fultz alongside Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. The 76ers were in the right place at the right time with Fultz looking lost and the Timberwolves despairing at their offers – Houston wouldn’t give them Eric Gordon, Miami put up Josh Richardson, then pulled him back – leading to the Sixers’ miraculous-under-the-circumstances deal. The Raptors are a surprise, No. 1 in the conference despite trading beloved DeMar DeRozan for just-passing-through Kawhi Leonard and firing Coach of the Year Dwane Casey. The exciting Bucks upgraded at coach with able Mike Budenholzer in place of erratic Jason Kidd.A legitimate contender would be a boon to the NBA. A year ago the Cavaliers turned over half their roster at midseason, finished No. 4 and still came out of the East draw … then were swept by the Warriors in the expected rout.• Fultz, the 2017 No. 1 overall pick, still rated by GMs as a wildly talented player, is falling out of the picture in Philadelphia. His shooting stroke changed nightly … and painfully, double-clutching clumsily on free throws last week.Fultz’s personal shooting coach said on Twitter that it wasn’t him, but Markelle’s shoulder injury … before remembering coach-player confidentiality and deleting his tweet … which by then had been screen-grabbed by half the internet. In the good news for Fultz, the pressure is off.• So much for the Warriors’ envy-of-all camaraderie.Only the Warriors can beat the Warriors, who might have four titles in a row if Draymond Green hadn’t punched LeBron James in his lower body and got himself suspended for Game 5 of the 2016 Finals, setting up Cleveland’s rally from a 3-1 series deficit. Two weeks later they got Kevin Durant to join their merry band anyway, with no one more involved in recruiting him than Draymond. So much for their envy-of-all camaraderie. On Monday night, Green went off on Durant in a screaming match over the last shot in their overtime loss to the Clippers, bringing up KD’s upcoming free agency (he can and will opt out), a major no-no among players. The team took Durant’s side – having been put on notice by KD, who turned down their long-term offer, leaving $100 million on the table to be a 2019 free agent, along with Klay Thompson. The team suspended Draymond for one game, but he refused to apologize. While insisting he wasn’t running off KD, he added ominously:“Whatever Kevin decides to do, whatever Klay decides to do, whatever who decides to do (Green is a 2020 free agent), we had great years together.”In Green’s first game back, they scored 86 points in Houston, losing by 21.“We’re banged up spiritually,” Coach Steve Kerr said. “There’s no getting around that.”• Signing Carmelo Anthony didn’t finish off the Rockets, after allNot that they gave him a chance. At 4-6, they sent Melo home before cutting him.And not that it was his fault that James Harden missed three games, Chris Paul two and they’re No. 22 in scoring, down from last season’s No. 2.Nevertheless, they’re 6-2 since, including a 21-point victory over the Warriors on Thursday, so it’s not over yet.• Next summer’s most coveted player might not be KD or Kawhi, but Anthony Davis. The Pelicans were everyone’s hot young team after finishing 48-34 and sweeping Portland in a first-round playoff series last spring. AD then hired LeBron’s agent, prompting speculation that he’ll demand a trade next summer, which became the new story of their season, or everyone’s season.AD explained – or threw out to get the locals off his back – that he hopes to become the NBA’s dominant player in New Orleans.Unfortunately, the Pelicans have yet to achieve the required greatness, falling to 9-7 after a 4-0 start.• The Lakers’ return to respectability isn’t as much fun as they thought.Coach Luke Walton warned against “people trying to split us,” before the home opener. If that seemed paranoid, it turned out that he got it in just under the wire. With the Lakers at 2-5, outright panic ensued … from within … as Magic Johnson called Walton in for a stern lecture that couldn’t have gotten more coverage if they had invited the press to attend.Johnson then provided assurance … just not the sort he intended … saying Walton will “finish the season unless something drastic happens.”Related Articles How athletes protesting the national anthem has evolved over 17 years Lakers practice early hoping to answer all questions Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
