Johanneson: a star with Leeds United

first_imgLong before Lucas Radebe made his mark at Leeds United, becoming “The Chief” in the club’s central defence, there was another South African who served the club with distinction. Albert Johanneson was a left wing who represented the All Whites in 200 matches in the 1960s, netting 68 times. He helped the club climb out of the Second Division and, in 1965, became the first black man to play in an FA Cup final.Being a black man meant Johanneson had to deal with plenty of pressure when he played for Leeds. He was often the target of racist insults, and the great George Best said of him: “Albert was quite a brave man to actually go on the pitch in the first place, wasn’t he? And he went out and did it.“He had a lot of skill. A nice man as well . which is, I suppose, the more important thing, isn’t it? More important than anything.”From Germiston to LeedsConsidered something of an enigma, Johanneson first joined Leeds in 1961. He was recommended to the club by a teacher in South Africa’s former Transvaal province, who had seen him in action for Germiston Coloured School and Germiston Colliers. After a three-month trial, the English club snapped him up.While he served the club well, Johanneson’s impact could have been greater had he not been pitted against Eddie Gray for a place in the team; the Scotsman was regarded as one of the better players in the club’s history.Johanneson had the ability, on his day, to turn opposing defences inside out, but he struggled somewhat to maintain consistency. Nonetheless, his goal scoring record was an envious one. He possessed excellent pace and he, for Leeds supporters at least, became a fan favourite.‘Come on, Albert’One former fan, writing on an Internet message board, had this to say about Johanneson: “Every time he got the ball we all shouted, ‘Come on, Albert’. I don’t recall any particular incident in a match, but he was very nippy and could beat a defender with his turns and speed.”According to Peter Lorimer, who played over 650 games for Leeds: “Albert could be the scourge of defences, but he never quite fulfilled his potential”.Another source echoes this sentiment: “Best remembered Albert as a nice man with a lot of skill, and others in the game have emphasised that with a little extra confidence he could have become a great player rather than a good one.”Leading Leeds’ revivalDespite his lack of consistency, and at times of confidence, Johanneson helped lead a Leeds revival in the 1960s, contributing to the club’s climb out of the English Second Division. In 1964, when the club earned promotion to the First Division, Johanneson was the team’s joint top scorer. While with Leeds, he played under the club’s legendary manager Don Revie, who led the side to two First Division titles, a League Cup, an FA Cup and two Fairs Cups.Johanneson was part of the team that faced Liverpool in the 1965 FA Cup final, going down 2-1 in extra time. His appearance marked the first time a black man had appeared in the final of the prestigious knockout cup.Scars and demonsThe pressure of playing for Leeds, and the abuse he had to contend with as a black man, took their toll on Johanneson.“He was braver than many people gave him credit for, and had the scars on his legs to prove it,” said Norman Hunter, former Leeds star and England central defender. But the scars weren’t only physical. Johanneson turned to drink to cope with his demons. He underwent treatment for alcoholism a number of times, but in the end it proved too big a barrier for him to overcome. It cost him his family – who moved out in the 1970s – and ultimately cost him his life: he died in a rundown flat in Leeds in September 1995, aged 53.Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? JioPhone production stopped, Jio now working on free Android Phone

first_imgMukesh Ambani caused a storm after announcing the JioPhone smart feature phone that was effectively free of cost. Millions of people have already pre-ordered the phone with shipments having started post Diwali. However, based on a new report, production of the JioPhone has stopped as Reliance Jio is now looking to work on an Android smartphone to take on Airtel and Vodafone. Update: In a statement to India Today Tech, a Jio spokesperson did not categorically deny the report, but said that the company would soon announce the next JioPhone booking date. “JioPhone, ‘India ka smartphone’ is committed to fulfilling the country’s digital vision. Jio welcomes the initial 6 million Indians who are moving to digital life with the JioPhone and will soon announce the next JioPhone booking date,” the spokesperson said.  Sources close to FactorDaily reported that production of JioPhone has stopped as the telcos is now focusing on bringing out an Android-based phone. To recall, the JioPhone runs on KaiOS, which is a version of Firefox OS. The latest report cites lack of apps supported by KaiOS as a reason behind Jio switching over to Android. The JioPhone as of now does not support apps for Facebook and WhatsApp, among others.”There are not enough apps compatible with KaiOS but people are working on developing special versions for the JioPhone,” a company insider told FactorDaily. Jio has reportedly been in talks with Facebook and Google to bring versions of Facebook, WhatsApp and YouTube apps to the JioPhone. What this means for the JioPhoneThe latest report, however, doesn’t answer whether Jio has met with the over 6 million pre-bookings of the JioPhone since announcement. The company had stopped taking pre-orders in August citing an overwhelming response. It promised that shipping of the pre-ordered JioPhones would begin post Diwali, and it is still unclear as to how many people have received their handsets.advertisementReliance Jio chairman in July said that the company has set a target of producing 5 million JioPhones every week, but with productions having halted now, that promise seems to have fallen flat. “It’s not that the target is changing…but a walled garden approach doesn’t work in mobile phones, it hasn’t worked in the past and it will not work in the future,” another source told FactorDaily. Also Read: Airtel announces Celkon Smart 4G smartphone at effective price of Rs 1349There is also no word on whether Jio will discontinue the JioPhone after it launches the Android-based phone. A Jio executive said that the company will manufacture at least 10 million KaiOS-based JioPhones, which means all who have already pre-ordered the handset are likley to get it soon.Jio’s Android phone to take on Airtel and VodafoneAs of now, there is no detail regarding the pricing strategy of the Android-based Jio phone. But with Airtel and Vodafone having launched cheap 4G smartphones like the Karbonn A40 Indian and Micromax Bharat 2 Ultra, respectively, Reliance Jio will look to bring an effective pricing scheme for its phone as well. As a smartphone, it may be difficult for Jio to keep an effective zero pricing as it did with the KaiOS-based JioPhone.Airtel and Karbonn’s 4G Android smartphone comes at an effective cost of Rs 1,399 while Vodafone and Micromax announced a smartphone at an effective price of Rs 999 provided that customers stay with the phone and the maintain a minimum monthly recharge amount for a period of three years. On Monday, Airtel announced a second 4G smartphone in partnership with Celkon, called Celkon Smart 4G that comes at an effective price of Rs 1,349. These entry-level smartphones by rival telecom operators seem to have pushed Jio to launch its own Android smartphone. While Jio looks to make the Android-based phone more consumer friendly by bringing modern-day apps, Google will also stand to benefit from tying up with Jio. The Android-based JioPhone will likely sport Android Go, a slimmed down version of Android 8.0 Oreo that is aimed for entry-level smartphones. For Google, having Android Go inside the JioPhone will help the company expand its reach further.”The expertise Google can bring with software is immense… It makes sense for Reliance to wait and go with Android Go. For Google, JioPhone can be an important vehicle to go after the next billion users,” said Faisal Kawoosa, principal analyst with CyberMedia Research.last_img read more
